## OM3 performance notes

OM3’s suggested jacket color is aqua. Like OM2 it uses a 50µm core, but the cable is optimized for laser-based equipment that uses fewer modes of light — the optimization that makes 10 Gigabit Ethernet at lengths up to 300 meters possible. Since the standard was issued, optical fiber manufacturers have greatly refined their manufacturing processes, and cables can now be made that support 10 GbE up to 400 meters. Newer deployments often use this laser-optimized 50/125µm multimode fiber (OM3), whose bandwidth supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 300 meters. For other ultra-long-distance transmissions that employ exclusively C-band and L-band with optical amplifiers, refer to the ITU-T recommendations for the most appropriate SMF types.
