Patchcord SC/UPC – SC/UPC 50/125 Multimode OM3 Duplex Zip 2.0mm OFNR Aqua from Red Cable Technology (RCT) is a Shaxon duplex patch cord for laser-optimized multimode runs. It puts high-quality SC/UPC connectors on both ends of 50/125 OM3 fiber inside a rugged aqua 2.0mm duplex zip cord OFNR jacket — ready for 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 300 meters.
Features & Specs:
- SC/UPC to SC/UPC duplex patch cord, 50/125 multimode OM3
- Rugged aqua 2.0mm duplex zip cord jacket — aqua is OM3’s suggested jacket color
- High-quality SC connectors: snap-in, push-on/pull-off design with a 2.5mm ferrule, much like the ST connector; simple, rugged, low cost, and known for excellent performance
- Polarity clearly marked with yellow polarity labels
- SC connectors ship unclipped, and the clip is included so it can be applied in the field if desired
- OM3 fiber: 50µm core like OM2, but optimized for laser-based equipment that uses fewer modes of light; capable of 10 Gigabit Ethernet at lengths up to 300 meters — its most common use
- Improved production techniques have extended OM3 to 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet up to 100 meters
- Laser-optimized 50/125 µm multi-mode fiber (LOMMF) provides sufficient bandwidth to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet up to 300 meters; refined manufacturing processes can push 10 GbE up to 400 meters
- LOMMF is designed for use with 850 nm VCSELs
Where multimode fits
Multi-mode fiber is typically cost effective for inside buildings or corporate campuses, while single-mode is better suited for longer distance runs. Single-mode fiber can transmit over greater distances but typically requires more expensive equipment — multi-mode is the cost-effective choice for installations where the lengths do not exceed a few hundred meters. For other ultra-long-distance transmissions that employ exclusively C-band and L-band with optical amplifiers, refer to the ITU-T recommendations for the most appropriate SMF types. And when weighing on-premises and access network fiber replacement or new installation, we highly recommend replacing legacy OS1 with a new bend-insensitive OS2 (ITU-T G.657A1) SMF cabling system to support longer reach with enhanced link performance.
About the standards behind it
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies — ICTs. Founded in 1865 to facilitate international connectivity in communications networks, it allocates global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develops the technical standards that ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect, and strives to improve access to ICTs for underserved communities worldwide.
